Why Hearth & Nook

Light should do more than illuminate.

We believe the right light can change the atmosphere of an entire room. Hearth & Nook curates lighting chosen not simply for how it looks, but for how it makes a space feel.

The belief

A room is not finished when the furniture is in place.

It is finished when the light is right.

A fixture is an object. Light is an atmosphere.

It changes the warmth of a wall, the depth of a corner, the way materials read after sunset, and ultimately how comfortable a room feels.

The problem

There is too much lighting. Not enough direction.

Modern shoppers are met with endless lighting catalogues, similar-looking products, technical specifications, trend-driven designs and marketplace listings. Finding something that produces light is easy. Knowing what belongs in the room is not.

  • What belongs in my room?
  • What scale is right?
  • What type of light do I actually need?
  • How will it feel at night?
  • Will it work with the rest of my space?

Hearth & Nook exists to make that decision more considered.

Our approach

We choose lighting with the room in mind.

01

Form

A light should look considered even when it is not switched on.

02

Atmosphere

We care about the quality of the light a fixture creates, not simply the fixture itself.

03

Proportion

A beautiful light in the wrong scale is still the wrong light.

04

Purpose

Every fixture should have a reason to exist in a room.

The difference

Not everything that looks good belongs in your home.

The marketplace approach

  • Endless products
  • Trend-driven selection
  • Search by specification
  • Hundreds of similar fixtures
  • The product is the focus

The Hearth & Nook approach

  • A curated selection
  • Room-first thinking
  • Chosen by atmosphere and purpose
  • Fewer pieces, more intention
  • The room is the focus

How we curate

Before a light reaches your room, it has to earn its place.

01

Discover

We look for forms, materials and lighting approaches that can meaningfully contribute to an interior.

02

Consider

We consider where a piece works, how it interacts with the room, and what atmosphere it can create.

03

Curate

Only pieces that fit the Hearth & Nook point of view belong in the collection.

04

Guide

We help you understand where a piece works, what to consider, and how it fits into a larger lighting scheme.

A quick reference

How high, how wide, how much drop.

Rough numbers to start from. Every room is different — if you are unsure, ask us before you buy.

01

Over a dining table

Hang the bottom of the fixture 75–90cm above the tabletop, and choose a fixture roughly 30–40cm narrower than the table itself.

02

Over an island

Leave about 90cm between the counter and the base of the fixture. Two or three smaller pendants usually read better than one large one over a long run.

03

A chandelier in an entry

Add the length and width of the room in feet — the result in inches is a reasonable starting diameter. Under a 2.4m ceiling, a flush or semi-flush piece usually works better.

04

Wall sconces

Centre them roughly 1.5–1.65m from the floor — eye height for most people standing. On either side of a mirror, space them a little wider than the mirror itself.

Light in the real world

The fixture is only half the story.

Same room. Same furniture. Same architecture. Same materials. Only the lighting changes.

After — warm, layered, intentional light

Same room. Different light. Different feeling.

What we look for

We look for lighting that ages with the room.

Chosen to feel considered beyond a single season.

  • Form that does not depend entirely on a trend.
  • Materials that feel appropriate in a real home.
  • Lighting that creates atmosphere rather than simply filling a room with brightness.
  • Pieces that can work as part of a larger lighting composition.

The human side

Lighting can be a big decision.

Especially when you are choosing something that will hang above your dining table, define a living room, or become the focal point of an entryway.

When you need a second opinion on scale, placement, style, room compatibility or installation, you can reach a person before and after you buy.

The Hearth & Nook edit

A smaller collection. A clearer point of view.

The right light changes more than what you see.

It changes the way dinner feels. The way a corner invites you to sit. The way materials come alive after sunset. The way a room feels when the day finally slows down.

That is what Hearth & Nook is here for.
