“I would hate to be the loud neighbor upstairs.” How one apartment renter started walking indoors anyway
A small apartment, brutal summers and a second-floor unit made daily walks hard. Here's what she did, what surprised her, and the one gripe she still has.
“I live in a small apartment in a city that has horribly hot summers so walking outdoors is not really an option.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
If you've ever planned an evening walk and then looked at the weather, the clock or your to-do list and quietly skipped it, you'll recognise Christy's situation.
She knew what she wanted. She wanted to walk more. The problem wasn't motivation. It was that her day, her apartment and the weather outside kept getting in the way.

Wanting to walk more is easy. Fitting it into the day isn't.
Christy isn't the only buyer who describes this wall:
“I bought this treadmill because I don’t like jogging in the winter months outside but still wanted to keep a good cardio regiment.”
— Steve · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
Heat, rain, darkness, winter. For most people, the barrier isn't knowing that walking is good for them. It's that walking depends on conditions they don't control. And the obvious fix, a full treadmill, brings its own problem: space.
“I had been wanting a walking pad for some time…”
“I had been wanting a walking pad for some time and finally pulled the trigger with this one.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
Christy had one specific worry before she bought, and it's the same one most apartment dwellers have:
“I was also worried that it would be loud as I am on the second floor and would hate to be the loud neighbor upstairs.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
That's the real question with any home cardio equipment. Not “will it work?” but “will it fit my home, and will I actually use it?”
What she chose: a compact walking pad
The Hearth & Nook Walking Pad is a low-profile treadmill built for walking at home: in front of the TV, beside a standing desk or in a corner of the living room.
- What it is: a compact walking treadmill with an LED display (time, speed, distance and calories), a handheld remote and a magnetic safety key.
- How it works: plug it in, attach the safety key, choose your speed with the remote and walk. When you're done, it slides flat under a bed or sofa.
- Why it's different from a full treadmill: it's made for walking in the space you already have, not for a dedicated home-gym room.

Why it worked for her: it removed the friction
Walking pads don't create motivation. What they do is remove the small obstacles that make walking easy to skip.
Friction #1: setup
If starting a walk means assembling something, you won't do it on a busy day. Christy's experience:
“It arrived promptly and was extremely easy to set up.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
Friction #2: space
It's a low, flat deck, so it doesn't claim a corner of the room.
“It is compact enough for my limited space and it stores away nicely under my bed when not in use.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
Friction #3: noise
Her biggest worry was the downstairs neighbour. Other buyers describe the noise level:
“…it’s not noisy at all.”
— Alique S. · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
Friction #4: time
You don't need a separate workout slot if you can walk while doing something else:
“I usually average 20 minutes a session and watch tv at the same time. Good way to catch up on shows.”
— Laurence D. · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
And Christy's result, in her own words:
“I've enjoyed using it while the temperatures are over 100 degrees.”
— Christy · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
She still has one gripe, and it's worth knowing before you buy:

What reviewers wish they'd known before buying
We'd rather you know these now than find out at home:
- The power cord is short. Christy calls it her one gripe. Plan to place it near an outlet or use a heavy-duty 3-prong extension cord.
- There's no handrail. It's a flat under-desk pad, so you walk hands-free. If you like something to hold for balance, set it up beside a desk or counter.
- It's compact, which means a shorter, narrower deck. One 5'9" buyer found he could walk a full stride. If you're over about 5'10" or want to run, a longer treadmill may suit you better.
- It's a solid piece of equipment. Sliding it out on a hard floor is easy; carpet takes more effort. If bending and lifting is hard for you, plan to leave it set up.
- Give it rest and basic care. Like any motorised treadmill, it needs breaks during long sessions and occasional belt care. Follow the manual's continuous-use and maintenance guidance, and if you ever notice heat, a smell or unusual noise, stop, unplug it and contact us.
- It won't start without the safety key. Keep it somewhere you'll remember.

What a normal week can look like
- Morning: 10 minutes at an easy pace with your coffee or the news.
- Workday: Walk slowly through a call or while clearing email (a standing desk or laptop stand helps).
- Evening: Walk through an episode. One buyer averages 20 minutes a session this way.
- Bad-weather days: Heat, rain, cold or early darkness stop mattering. It's the most common reason buyers give.
- Weekend: A longer, slower walk while you catch up on a show, with rest breaks per the manual.
Is it right for you?
- You want to walk more but weather, time or safety keep getting in the way
- You live in an apartment or small home
- You'd walk more if you could do it while watching TV or working
- You want something that slides out of sight when not in use
- You mainly want to run or train for speed
- You're over about 5'10" and want a long, full-size stride
- You need a handrail to hold or support your weight while walking (this pad has none)
- You can't place it near an outlet and don't want to use an extension cord
- You'd need to move and store it daily and lifting is difficult for you

One last word from a buyer
“I’ve used it everyday so far, even if I do 10 minutes on it.”
— Laurence D. · ★★★★★ · Amazon review
That's what the Walking Pad is for. Not a workout you have to schedule, just more movement in the time you already have. If the weather, your schedule or your space keeps getting between you and a walk, it may be the simplest fix.
