How to Choose the Right Home Gym Equipment
The right piece of equipment depends less on brand and more on three things: your space, your weight range, and how many exercises it actually covers. Here's how to check each one before you buy.
1. Measure your space first
Before buying anything, measure the corner or room you'll actually train in — including the clearance you need on incline and the room a bench needs when it's folded flat. Equipment that doesn't fit the space you have gets used less, not more.
Quick check: Stand where your bench would go and raise both arms overhead. That's your real incline clearance — not just the folded footprint on the spec sheet.
Our Extra-Large Exercise Mat (8×4 ft) is a useful reference size if you're planning a floor-work corner — lay painter's tape to that footprint before you buy anything else.
2. Buy for where you're headed, not just where you are
An adjustable dumbbell set that tops out at 44 lb per hand is fine to start, but if you expect to get stronger, a set that adjusts to 66 or 88 lb per hand means you won't replace it in six months. Check the weight range against a realistic year-out estimate, not just today.
The Adjustable Dumbbell Set
Adjusts 44–88 lb per hand — one purchase covers a full year of progression.
3. Check the weight capacity of benches and racks
A bench's rated capacity should comfortably exceed your body weight plus the heaviest load you'll press or row on it — not just match it. The same goes for storage racks: check what they're rated to hold before loading them up.
Adjustable Bench
9 positions, rated to 800 lb.
Bench — Premium
Heavier-duty build, rated to 881 lb.
4. Favor pieces that do more than one job
A kettlebell trains differently than a dumbbell of the same weight, and a set of resistance bands covers warm-ups, mobility work, and travel training in one compact piece. Equipment that only does one narrow thing is the first to go unused.
Kettlebell
9–88 lb, powder-coated cast iron.
Resistance Band Set
Set of 5, covers warm-ups through accessory work.
